Jon Jones has said he wants to fight Alexander Gustafsson this fall, and the Swedish light-heavyweight has tweeted the fight is “on”, but it remains to be seen when it will take place. While Jones has reported the dislocated toe he received while taking out Chael Sonnen at UFC 159 is healing well, Dana White says the champ might still need several months to recover.
In a report from MMA Fighting.com, White was quoted saying the following about Jones, while attending a pre-UFC 160 media event.
“He says he feels great, the toe’s healing good, but the problem is that ligament,” he said. “That ligament popped. Anytime you tear a ligament, blood flow helps repair the thing and heal, and you don’t get a lot of blood flow to the toe. Who knows? This thing could be six weeks, it could be six months. It’s a pain in the ass, man. Always some little, crazy thing.”
White added that Jones will likely undergo a MRI when he returns from vacation to get a better sense of how his foot is doing. If his toe isn’t healing up as planned, then his hopes of setting a new title defense record (of six) will likely get pushed to the end of 2013.
Jones’ manager Malki Kawa recently said that the 25 year-old star is considering fighting two more times in 2013 if doable, however, that would be pretty surprising all things considered.
