Once considered as a dominating prospect at 8-0 as the WEC heavyweight tourney winner, Brandon Vera has since suffered many setbacks in his career. After enduring a viscous TKO by elbows to the face by now current champ Jon Jones, to then having his nose disfigured by Thiago Silva (overturned to no contest), Vera has been the subject of much online ridicule.

“This guy has been publicly smashed by the fans, the media — I mean everybody is just hammering this guy,” White said. “That’s the type of thing that motivates a guy. Before Thursday’s press conference, he told me, ‘Thank you so much for this opportunity. I have never, ever been this motivated. I’ve never had so many people talk so much trash about me.'”

Following the online backlash of fans and pundits in the sport calling fowl on the claim that White would give Vera a title shot on his second straight victory, Vera has used it as fuel to his fire at UFC on Fox.

“It’s all about opportunities in life,” White said. “Every once in a while, a great opportunity comes along, and you have to go grab it. I think the opportunity and the humiliation of people saying ‘you don’t deserve it’ has lit a fire under that kid.”
