A few days ago, Nate Diaz raised more than a few eyebrows, and likely prompted a few chuckles, by tweeting that he was going to skip his November 30th scrap with Gray Maynard and attend his high school reunion. The lightweight tilt is set to take place at the TUF 18 Finale, which will be hosted by the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Now, if you’ve followed the career of Diaz, and his Twitter activities, then you know that the Stockton fighter has been known to make provocative and or memorable statements from time-to-time. So is UFC boss man Dana White actually worried about finding a new opponent for Maynard? While speaking to media members in Las Vegas Tuesday, White had this to say about the situation (comments via MMA Junkie.com):
“I’m shocked,” White said with an understandable sarcastic tone. “The Diaz Brothers are doing something crazy? I’m shocked. I heard about it yesterday. Somebody told me about it. But I haven’t talked to (UFC matchmaker) Joe (Silva) or Nate or anybody. I don’t even know if it’s true.”
“I didn’t even know Nate did this, that he tweeted it. Did he talk to Joe Silva? If he really tweeted that he’s going to his high school reunion and didn’t call Joe and those guys and say (anything) … I don’t take Twitter for news. It’s not an official statement.”
Really, unless Diaz is looking to get cut by the UFC, it’s a pretty safe bet that the rugged fighter will be ready to throw down with Maynard. Diaz (16-9) will be fighting for the first time he was stopped by Josh Thomson in April, which followed a UD loss to then lightweight champ Benson Henderson at UFC on FOX 7 in December. Maynard (11-2-1), meanwhile, is also looking to rebound from a loss, as he was taken out by TJ Grant in his last outing at UFC 160 in May.
