Josh Thomson made a huge statement at UFC on Fox as he becomes the first fighter to ever stop 209’s Nate Diaz in the cage. No easy feat, the San Jose native rocked Nathan with a head kick, followed with some viscous ground and pound to get the ref. to step in. Nate’s brother Nick had seen enough as well, as he throws in the towel simultaneously. It may not be a valid sign to stop a fight, according to the CSAC rule books (that’s boxing), but the towel showed the concern of Nick for his younger brother.

It was reported by Dana White after the fight that Nate had a deep cut on his head, down to the bone.

Thomson may now feel like a top title contender in the lightweight division, however he will likely need to take another bout (or two) in the interim, as the UFC has already put together the next title contender match between T.J. Grant and Gray Maynard. No date has been given to the match-up, leaving “The Punk” in need of a new challenger.
