Another episode of “UFC Tonight” aired Wednesday evening and featured items on two UFC champions and a pair of hopeful title-contenders.
Ariel Helwani discussed Chris Weidman, the reigning UFC middleweight champion, adding an agent to his team, signing with WME and Brad Slater.
“He has signed with WME and Brad Slater, the agent who’s the agent of Ronda Rousey. He’s looking to work on film, TV, books, commercial endorsements and philanthropic endeavors. He also has a new manager in Shane McCassy of Manage Create.”
Weidman is coming off a victory over Lyoto Machida in defense of his 185-pound title.
Speaking of Rousey, it was confirmed that she did suffer a serious hand injury during his win over Alexis Davis for the female bantamweight title earlier this month.
“It was reported by the LA Times that she broke her thumb in the fight, but she will not need a cast or surgery. I was told by her team that she’ll have scope of her right knee on Tuesday and the recovery is two weeks, so she shouldn’t be out for too long.”
Luke Rockhold, a former Strikeforce champion, is hoping to secure himself a shot at Weidman – or a rematch with Vitor Belfort. He left his last fight far from 100-percent.
“He’s been cleared to train after suffering a broken toe in his last fight. He wants to fight Vitor Belfort next, but if that fight doesn’t happen, he wants Chris Weidman.”
Ex-UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is in a similar boat to Rockhold, waiting for either a shot at the belt or a match up with a fellow contender.
“Frankie Edgar told me the fight that makes the most sense to him is Cub Swanson. They’re next to each other in the rankings and it’s the fight that will get him a title shot. I asked Cub about it, and Cub told me that he’s been promised a title shot, and last he checked, Frankie doesn’t have a title, but he would love to punch him.”
