The next step in the evolution of MMA is on the horizon. Drawing inspiration from major mainstream sporting associations and the scouting of future talent, the UFC will now debut its own version of a combine.

The UFC Fan Expo on July 6, 2013 in Las Vegas, NV will now integrate an amateur MMA combine to provide prospective athletes the opportunity to display their skills against others with the same dream. The news comes after the creation of MMA Draft by UFC vets Urijah Faber and Phil Davis and their partnership with the UFC.

Speaking with Bleacher Report, Faber offered his insight on the newly developed event:

“It’s the first time we’re going to do it and it’s going to be limited to 100 people. We’re going to have a bunch of professional fighters there. We’re going to have sports psychologists, physical therapists, and strength and conditioning guys. We’ve got a whole curriculum that we’re going to run through with these prospects and take their time.”

He also added:

“The combine is basically going to see where they’re set, this testing is going to be done by a lot of our professionals and you can kind of see where they stack up,” Faber said. “It’s going to be an opportunity for guys to stand out. It’s going to be a real data-heavy thing and see where they stack up as an athlete, where they stack up as a mixed martial artist. It kind of adds to your rising stars.”

As the event is open to amateurs only, they will now be afforded the ability to be seen on a more intimate forum with a direct line to MMA’s most prolific promotion: The UFC. With the inclusion of MMA Draft, a website complete with fighter database and tools for a person seeking a career in Mixed Martial Arts, the future looks bright for those individuals who once had to partake on an arduous, sometimes uncertain journey just to make a name for themselves.

It’s expected that media members, pro fighters, managers and sponsors are all receiving invites so if it’s exposure you’re looking for, mark your calenders for July 5th and 6th at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV. Plans are still being finalized but stay tuned as the date draws closer as more complete details for the historic event become available.
