In the co-main event of UFC on Fox 8 — and the third bout of the televised main card — Rory MacDonald jabbed his way to victory over a surprisingly inactive Jake Ellenberger to take home a listless three round unanimous decision.
The Seattle crowd began voicing their displeasure in the tepid bout early in the first round, as neither fighter engaged for any length of time. MacDonald may have won that stanza with a pair of hard jabs as time ran out.
In the second round, Ellenberger looked confused as MacDonald continued to land jabs, and then disengage. Ellenberger finally committed to a takedown with two minutes left in round two, but it failed. McDonald went on to jab his way to a minor advantage through the third, when Ellenberger landed a double leg takedown to a the crowd’s delight — but ran out of time.
The crowd boo’ed an obvious MacDonald decision victory. A Seattle local, recalling the similar reception to McDonald’s showboating victory against BJ Penn in Seattle last year, joked that MacDonald may be the most hated figure in Seattle sports since Howard Schultz was blamed for the Sonics’ departure.
The scored were read as 30-27, 29-28, and 30-27, all in favor of Rory MacDonald.
