In the evening’s eighth bout, Jorge Masvidal scored a submission victory by D’Arce choke over Michael Chiesa at 4:59 of the second round at UFC on Fox 8.

A back-and-forth first round saw Washington State native Chiesa score a big right hand to bring the Seattle crowd to its feet. But the veteran Masvidal recovered quickly, working out of a Chiesa guillotine to land punching combinations of his own. The two continued the ebb and flow, exchanging strikes throughout the stanza.

But the more polished Masvidal would take the advantage in the second, tossing Chiesa about and landing hard rights and lefts. Towards the end of the round he ensnared a shaken Chiesa with a D’Arce choke.

On commentary, Joe Rogan mistakenly remarked that Chiesa was in no trouble. But like Eddie Bravo’s infamous gaffe in the classic Renzo Gracie vs. Kazushi Sakuraba PRIDE bout (where Sakuraba turned a nasty Kimura lock seconds after Bravo had commented that Gracie was in no danger), Chiesa would succumb to Masvidal’s choke moments later.
