In the main event of UFC on Fox 8, Demetrious Johnson successfully defended his UFC Flyweight title with a fast-paced, well-balanced striking and grappling attack, eventually securing an armbar to defeat John Moraga in round five.

The quicker “Mighty Mouse” struck efficiently and landed takedowns throughout the bout, keeping Moraga on his back heel standing, and forcing him to remain defensive during stretches on the mat. Johnson easily and repeatedly passed Moraga’s guard, occasionally entangling an arm to look for a arm lock or crucifix, but mostly kept a quick paced “ground-and-pound” assault. In the fifth stanza, as Moraga defended a Kimura in side control, Johnson spun to the armbar. Referee Herb Dean stopped the bout at  3:43 in round five.

Bruce Buffer read the result as a victory by “tap-out,” however it appears there was no actual submission; rather, Dean simply stopped the bout as Moraga’s arm was trapped and extended.

The challenger Moraga, a two-time All-American wrestler, scored his only takedown of the fight at the end of the second round, but failed to capitalize. Among Moraga’s only other highlights was a punch near the end of the fourth which bloodied Johnson’s nose.

The successful title defense before the Seattle crowd was particularly sweet for Johnson, who trains out of nearby Kirkland, WA and was raised in Parkland, WA. Johnson improves to 21-2-1, while Moraga, of Phoenix, AZ, drops to 14-2.
