Darren Elkins is the master of transforming into a smothering blanket and ruining a fighter’s momentum. Dennis Bermudez was a TUF runner-up who’s done well for himself in the Octagon proper, but top-level guys (like Jeremy Stephens, Ricardo Lamas and the Korean Zombie) find ways to put him away. This is our UFC on FOX co-main event, so get ready for Elkins to try to spoil the Long Island-based fighter’s hometown fight while Bermudez attempts to punch him into oblivion.
Bermudez opens with a jumping knee and some leather thrown, and his low-kicks start scoring early. But he slips and Elkins pounces, and though Bermudez works back up, Elkins likes the view from down there, so he keeps wrestling Bermudez to the canvas. The TUF vet avoids all trouble on the ground and always returns to his feet, yet it’s Elkins who’s controlling where the fight goes, and that’s going to impact the scorecards.
Round 2 has Bermudez turning up the heat with his punches, and Elkins avoids eating anything too big while trying to work for a takedown. Bermudez flips the script and gets a takedown of his own, which forces Elkins to get back up, and when Bermudez goes for another takedown, Elkins threatens with a guillotine. He extricates himself from the sub, but Elkins succeeds in getting him down.
The final round is close, with Elkins getting no takedowns yet lashing into his foe with punches while Bermudez does the same. No one is getting dominated, no one is really edging ahead, they’re just hurting each other until the final horn sounds.
