If Nate Marquardt were a car, he’d be an old Model T rusting in someone’s backyard, covered with a tarp and a relic of a time long past. But he’s not a car, he’s an MMA fighter, and since UFC on FOX 23 is in Denver, C.O. and close to home, he just had to be on this card. So of course the UFC let him “main event” the FOX Sports 1 prelims, and of course they gave him a beatable fighter in Sam Alvey.

Too bad Alvey has just a fraction of the mileage and wear and tear.

Absolutely nothing worthwhile happened in Round 1, as both men wanted to counter-punch and neither wanted to be the first one in the exchanges. But Marquardt began losing his edge in the second, and soon Alvey was nailing him with combos and eventually dropping him. Marquardt was quickly back up and swinging hard, but accuracy eluded him, and his eye was bloody by round’s end. Round 3 saw Marquardt scoring with a trip, but he did nothing with it, and they boxing match continued with Alvey landing a big uppercut and Marquardt hitting air. Time ran out with the hometown hero definitely behind on the scorecards.
