KJ Noons and Josh Burkman have fought everywhere in a multitude of promotions, and here they are moving down to lightweight to do the “main event” of the FOX Sports 1 prelims.
Given that Noons has always done his best work employing his boxing skills, Burkman keeps him at bay with kicks, only following them up when he forces Noons to backpedal. But it’s a methodical, slow-paced game, and by the midway point of the first round the crowd starts booing. Inexplicably, Noons doesn’t throw anything real until there are 15 seconds in the round – what the heck is he doing out there?
Thankfully, Noons comes out aggressive in Round 2, which ultimately results in Burkman changing levels, scooping him up, and dumping him to the canvas. The former Strikeforce star is back to his feet instantly, but the fires of his aggression have been snuffed out, and aside from a few looping left hands, Noons is back to being “Mr. I Don’t Want To Be Here”.
Burkman scores an immediate takedown in Round 3, yet he seems to be fading hard, and Noons starts winging punches that force the World Series of Fighting vet to keep clinching to avoid getting snuffed out. It works, Noons’ offense is sufficiently stifled, and the round ends with Burkman getting the double-leg takedown and settling into top position.
Result: Josh Burkman def. KJ Noons via Unanimous Decision
