Not only did Dong Hyun Kim score a huge win tonight at UFC Fight Night 29, but the welterweight demonstrated he’s more than a ridiculously talented grappler, by brutally knocking out Erick Silva. If you missed it, Kim floored Silva with a crushing left hand in round two, and earned “Knockout of the Night” for the performance. The “Stun Gun” also picked up an extra 50 grand for the award.
Plenty of people thought Raphael Assuncao-TJ Dillashaw had the potential to be a barn burner, and the top ten ranked bantamweights didn’t disappoint. The two earned “Fight of the Night” and 50K each for the entertaining bout, which saw Assuncao emerged with the split decision win.
While there was a tap-out recorded at UFC FN 29, and a pretty impressive / terrifying one at that, Rousimar Palhares was not awarded “Submission of the Night” for his heel hook win over Mike Pierce. The UFC tweeted no awarded was being handed out, due to “due to unsportsman-like conduct”.
Palhares caught Pierce less than a minute in with the dangerous technique, but after the rugged welterweight tapped and the ref jumped in, “Toquinho” held on for another second or so. If you forgot, Palhares was suspended in 2010 for 90 days, after the New Jersey commission ruled he held on to a heel hook versus Tomasz Drwal too long (which left his knee trashed).
