Just days before Hugo “Wolverine” Viana was set to throw down with Wilson Reis on September 4th at UFC Fight Night 28, the TUF Brazil vet has announced he’s hurt his knee and can no longer compete. As a result, the upcoming card has been reduced to 11 fights.
Viana announced his knee, and posted a pic of the damaged joint, via Instagram. MMA Fighting.com has confirmed with sources that the card has been reduced to 11 scraps, and also posted this translation of “Wolverine’s” announcement.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to fight at UFN 28 because I injured my left knee on my last jiu-jitsu trainings,” Viana said. “Thanks God that’s not a bad injury and I’ll started the treatment next week. I hope to return to trainings to be able to fight in a next UFC show in Brazil.”
Viana (7-1) was looking to rebound from the stoppage loss he suffered against former TUF finalist TJ Dillashaw at UFC on FOX 7 in April. Prior to the defeat “Wolverine” score a split decision win over John Teixeira da Conceicao and KO victory over Reuben Duran in his first two UFC bouts.
Reis (16-4) was brought into replace Johnny Bedford at UFC FN 28, and would have been making his UFC debut. The Bellator vet is currently riding a four fight win streak.
So, that’s unfortunate for Viana as well as Reis, since the timing of the injury likely left the UFC little to no options as far as finding a replacement. UFC FN 28 will take place in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and will be broadcast on FOX Sports 1. The good news is that it will still feature a light-heavyweight scrap between Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader in the main event, as well as a middleweight bout between Yushin Okami and “Jacare” Souza.
