The first bout of the UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva main card was a standup-heavy match-up of two up-and-coming welterweights, which saw Chris Cariaso earn a split decision victory over Louis Smolka.

California’s Cariaso fought well out of his southpaw stance, landing the more effective punching combinations and solid kicks to the legs and body. The longer Smolka, of Hawaii, struggled to take advantage of his reach advantage throughout the bout’s three rounds, as the more aggressive Cariaso utilized better movement and was more aggressive.

Smolk entered the bout a (-145) favorite. He did his best work in the third round, landing several strong straight rights, and in a ground sequence in the second where he attained mount position. But even in those stanzas, Caraiso landed more strikes — particularly to the body — and was rightfully awarded the decision.

Caraiso rises to 17-4 in his pro MMA career. Smolka falls to 6-2.

At UFC Fight Night 40, Chris Cariaso defeated Louis Smolka by split decision (29-28, 28-28, 29-29).
