Lauren Murphy’s endless supply of grit served her well in Invicta FC, but it wasn’t enough for her to beat back Octagon newcomer Katlyn Chookagian at UFC Fight Night 91 tonight.

A regional champ with a well-rounded game and great counter-striking, Chookagian started off landing some leather from outside, prompting Murphy to try to play the clinch game and chip away with knees. The rookie made space often, though, and racked up enough points with punches to take the first round.

In the second, Murphy was able to impose her will and take the fight to the canvas. However, her ground and pound was stifled by Chookagian going into Koala Bear-mode. Murphy’s takedown attempt in the third was met with a big knee to the chops, and while she did manage to get her foe down for a hot second, Chookagian was able to get back up and smack her around.

It was enough for the judges, who gave the bout to the new girl.

Result: Katlyn Chookagian def. Lauren Murphy via Unanimous Decision
