The first bout of the prelims on FOX Sports 1 have jiu-jisu black belt Yan Cabral scrapping with larcenist Reza Madadi.
As this is the fifth fight in the Octagon for both men, and we’ve yet to see either really shine, you can sort of guess going in how much thrilling action we’ll be in for (answer: not much). For the first four minutes of Round 1, we see nothing but clinch-work, with Cabral and Madadi forgetting that this is an MMA bout and thinking it’s only a wrestling match. Cabral gets the takedown in the final minute, and though he doesn’t do much with it, it’s likely enough to give him the round on the scorecards.
They come out with a little more fire in the second, winging punches, and Madadi really digging his shovel-hooks into his foe’s body. Cabral stifles him with a takedown, and when they scramble back to their feet the hugging game continues maddeningly against the fence. Madadi gets an ankle pick takedown in the final minute, and they spend the rest of the round looking sloppy as hell with their punches.
Cabral has absolutely nothing in his gas tank come Round 3, but Madadi at least has a few fumes – fumes which fuel him on to an uppercut and a flurry of punches that has Cabral out on his feet and referee Leon Roberts jumping in.
Result: Reza Madadi def. Yan Cabral via TKO (Punches) at 1:56, R3
