With three open spots and just a handful of days to go, UFC officials have been working around the clock to complete UFC Fight Night 83.
One of those openings is now filled, as Augusto Mendes will make his Octagon debut this Sunday against Cody Garbrandt. Mendes replaces John Lineker, who was removed Monday after developing Dengue fever.
Mendes (5-0) has finished all five of his pro opponents and his one amateur fight, including four via submission. He last fought in July, completing a third appearance for Legacy FC with a second round triangle choke win vs. Donald Williams.
Garbrandt (7-0), who trains out of Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, is also unbeaten in his career. That includes two straight victories with the UFC. He had started his MMA career with six consecutive finishes before being forced to go the distance vs. Enrique Briones last July.
The UFC Fight Night 83 card has been one hit hard by injuries, leaving officials to pair fighters with new opponents along the way. Sunday’s main event from Pittsburgh will feature Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone vs. Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira on FOX Sports 1.
