Roy Nelson scored one of the greatest wins of his career today at UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi, knocking out the legendary Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira in the first round of their main event heavyweight encounter.

Nogueira began the bout advancing cautiously, only to be staggered by a Nelson uppercut to stagger Nogueira.  Nelson proceeded to patiently stalk Nogueira, as the Brazilian legend tried to establish a jab. Finally, Nelson scored a big overhand to knock Nogueira senseless at the bout’s 3:37 mark.

It was a “walk off KO” for Nelson, who hailed his opponent, who is one of the sport’s pioneers, in a post-fight interview. As Nelson put it, “We’re all here because of him.”

Nelson didn’t call out an opponent — only saying he hopes for a title shot soon. For Nogueira, who has been finished in four of his last six appearances, the knockout loss could spell an end to his storied career.

At UFC Fight Night 39, Roy Nelson defeated Rodrigo Nogueira by KO (punch) at 3:37 of round one.
