Thiago Silva failed to make weight in his Light Heavyweight bout with Matt Hamill, but he was able to dominate the bout with effective striking and take home a unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27) in his home country of Brazil.
Hamill, of Ohio, is mostly known for his wrestling acumen — but surprisingly, mostly tried to box with Silva. This would play into Silva’s hands, where he would score with what seemed like countless leg kicks, and several straight punches. Hamill landed a few punches, but afforded only a few takedown attempts, and was peppered with strikes throughout.
By the fight’s end, Hamill was hunched forward and pacing about the Octagon. Silva had also slowed by then, possibly due his weight issues. The outcome, however, was clear. The crowd boo’ed and whistled a bit during the slow bout, but was brought alive by the occasional big shot from Silva and cheered the decision.
At UFC Fight Night 29, Thiago Silva defeated Matt Hamill by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27).
