Rafeal Dos Anjos earned the biggest victory of his career at UFC Fight Night 27, defeating Donald Cerrone by unanimous decision in a meeting of lightweight contenders.
Cerrone took an early lead with his familiar Muay Thai attack, scoring with leg kicks from the outside at an advancing Dos Anjos in the first minutes. But Dos Anjos kept the pressure on, eventually landing a hard looping left to drop the “Cowboy.” Cerrone tried to recover and attacked with a triangle choke, but Dos Anjos was able to keep his posture and avoid the submission. Hard elbows in Cerrone’s guard punctuated the round for Dos Anjos.
As the second round began, Dos Anjos kept the pressure on, but was taken down by Cerrone two minutes into the stanza. Dos Anjos escaped and kept tight to Cerrone, nullifying much of his standup, landing here and there, and eventually scoring a takedown of his own. The round ended with neither fighter having a significant advantage, but a slight edge belonged to Dos Anjos.
Cerrone was able to score more kicks at range in the third, shrugging off two takedowns attempts from Dos Anjos and landing a stepping knee to the body. Dos Anjos landed a few punches in their exchanges, but seemed out-worked by a small margin.
All three judges scored the bout 29-28 for Rafeal Dos Anjos, who has now won five straight bouts.
