Since joining the UFC back in 2009, Alexander Gustafsson has lost only to Phil Davis, Daniel Cormier, Anthony Johnson and Jon Jones. Assuming that the Davis loss was an early-career aberration, that means Gustafsson has lost only to the absolute best.

So where does that put him in a light-heavyweight division whose champ couldn’t beat Jones, and whose star (Jones) can stay out of trouble long enough to matter?

Apparently, it puts him in a main event bout opposite Jimi Manuwa at UFC Fight Night 109. Gustafsson will get to fight close to home (the event is in Stockholm, Sweden), and if he can keep Manuwa from putting his lights out, he’ll get to thrill the hometown crowd. And who knows, maybe an impression performance will earn him another title shot…
