Few lives in the sport have been as tragic as that of Josh Samman.

He had a stint of TUF and has had some ups and downs in the Octagon, but he lost his girlfriend in a car accident while the two were texting. He wrote a book on his experiences, and has occasionally written some articles on the subject.

And this past weekend he was found unresponsive in his apartment in Florida, and is currently in a coma. Speculation centers around a heroin problem, fueled in part by the local MMA ring announcer found dead of an alleged overdose right next him, but Samman’s mom says we shouldn’t jump to any conclusions.

As per FOX Sports:

Local MMA reporter and ring announcer Christopher Rothstein forwarded a statement from Samman’s mother on Sunday to FOX Sports.

“Josh is still in a coma, and more tests are being done. That is the latest update on my son’s condition,” Samman’s mother said in the statement. “And in spite of speculation, there was no heroin found in Josh’s system whatsoever. No matter what people are posting on social media.

“The reason I am making this statement is, because Josh touched so many lives, and loved inspiring others, especially young people. I don’t want them to lose faith in him, and whatever he brought out in them, because of the lies. He would want them to “never give up.”

Regardless of what felled Samman, one thing is sure: the dude has had a tragic existence.
