It’s the nature of the beast to have the heavyweight heroes of yesterday get eaten by the heroes of tomorrow. We’ve seen this with long-ago champ Andrei Arlovski, who somehow still putters along despite falling to young buck after young buck. We’ve seen this with Big Nog, who is a ‘name’ but a shadow of his old self. And we’ll likely see this on Saturday, in the co-main event of UFC 218.

I am, of course, talking about Alistair Overeem versus Francis Ngannou.

Overeem had a recent shot at the belt, and came up short against the fists of Stipe Miocic. He’ll likely come up short against Ngannou, who punches just as hard as the champ.

But weep not for the Dutchman. There was a time when he was the young buck, devouring the old.

Here’s a Countdown vid in his honor.
