In terms of UFC events classified as ‘eagerly anticipated’, it’s hard to describe UFC 217 fan interest as anything but tepid.
Part of the reason for that is because none of the UFC 217 athletes are named Conor McGregor, Ronda Rousey or Jon Jones. The other is part is that… well… the world has moved on without Georges St. Pierre, and if GSP doesn’t care about fan interest, why should fans care about him?
But the UFC has a job to do, and putting together the most compelling fight they can in any division means coaxing GSP out of retirement to face middleweight champ Michael Bisping. Now the onus is on them to hype the match-up. Can they do that successfully?
Below is the audio of the most recent Bisping/St. Pierre media conference call. The most salient points are that Bisping cares not one bit about the lawsuit some kid just filed against him, nothing about GSP terrifies Bisping, ain’t no way in hell Bisping would fight McGregor (but maybe St. Pierre would!), and maybe Bisping won’t retire after this fight.
Give it a listen.
