The UFC 207 main card opens up with a flyweight bout between Louis Smolka and Ray Borg – although it’s a stretch calling this bout flyweight, as Borg failed to make weight. But whatever, these guys can scrap, have about an equal amount of success and failures in the Octagon, and are each coming off losses so they hungry. This should be a good one.

The slightly shorter Borg needs about a minute to work his way inside of the reach of Smolka, and when he does, he gets Smolka down and starts threatening with submission – first a D’Arce, then a rear naked choke. Smolka defends, but when he scrambles up his opponent just throws him down again, and Borg takes mount and threatens with an armbar and then omoplata. Smolka goes for a leglock, and when Borg counters he does so with his fists. The horns sounds and Smolka has gotten the worst of it.

Round 2 opens with Borg having all the confidence in the world, which is evident in his aggressive striking and dancing about. His takedown almost gets reversed by Smolka’s scramble, and when he winds up in mount Smolka pulls out a heelhook attempt from up his sleeve somewhere. Borg cracks him hard in response, and just works him hard until the horn.

In between rounds Borg tells his corner he thinks he broke his ankle. However, he still comes out for the third, gets a takedown within a minute, and goes to work on top. Midway through the round Borg latches on with an ultra-tight head/arm choke. Smolka somehow guts it out, and the waning seconds have them standing and Borg covering up while Smolka tries to do something – anything – but to no avail.
