Welcome to CagedInsider’s liveblog coverage of UFC 203, an event highlighted by heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic and challenger Alistair Overeem, plus a few other interesting match-ups.
First up is the one and only Fight Pass prelim (thanks to an elevator mishap that took out CB Dolloway, thereby scratching his fight): Hawaiian slugger Yancy Medeiros and banger Sean Spencer.
Medeiros takes the center of the cage and starts controlling range with a piercing kick off his back leg. Spencer responds by staying mobile, and when Medeiros commits, he goes headhunting with his combos. Midway through the round Spencer’s right hand starts to get through – prompting Medeiros to get creative with a spinning backfist attempt, a spinning back-kick, and a lot of baiting that actually works in drawing his foe out. By the time the horns sounds they’re totally slugging it out.
It takes all of 30 seconds for Medeiros to drop Spencer with a kick to the head, and when Spencer is struggling to keep from drowning, Medeiros goes for a guillotine, a D’Arce and then finally a rear naked choke that gets the job done.
Results: Yancy Medeiros def. Sean Spencer via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at :49, R2
