There were a few years when Cain Velasquez was a beast. It was before injuries kept him on the sidelines for over a year, before Fabricio Werdum took his belt and took his soul. But yeah, he was something else when he in his prime and cutting through the heavyweight division like a hot knife through butter.

Since Velasquez and Werdum are going to go at it again at UFC 196 in February, let’s take a walk down memory lane, to a time when the man to beat in the UFC was a former (and soon to be again) WWE star named Brock Lesnar.

Lesnar was the Ronda Rousey of 2010 – the one person with the kind of mass appeal that seemed to transcend the confines of the sport. Earlier in the year Lesnar had turned his interim championship into a real one by beating Shane Carwin.

Velasquez ended all that glory once the cage door shut.
