Johny Hendricks weighed in at 171.5 at today’s UFC 171 weigh-ins, and will have to lose one-and-a-half pounds today to contest the welterweight title against Robbie Lawler as scheduled tomorrow night.
Hendricks has two hours to make weight. If he fails, Lawler, who weighed in at the 170 lb. limit, can still earn the welterweight belt with a win tomorrow. The title would remain vacant if Hendricks wins after being unable to weigh within the 170 lb. limit.
A jittery Hendricks had to be told to stand still while stepping on the scale. He would say, “I thought we made it, we’ll see what happens in the next hour” to Joe Rogan in a brief interview.
The UFC 171 weigh-in began with typical fanfare. Joe Rogan hyped the crowd and introduced the ring card girls. Arianny looked great, and excited besides.
Dana was hyped-up too, wearing a pretty fabulous hot pink sweater. Almost as fabulous as “Bubba” McDaniel’s knee-high “Superman” socks.
But the weigh-in results — what we were there for — were surprisingly mixed:
A visibly anxious Renee Fortee weighed first at 157.5, then stripped to make 157 — still too high for his lightweight bout with Francisco Trevino. He’ll come back to try and lose that extra pound.
Kevin Gastelum looked drained at 172.5: too heavy for his welterweight bout with Rick Story. Story all but headbutted Gastelum in the ensuing staredown.
Then, there was Hendricks.
Hopefully all three can make weight, and this card reaches its potential.
On a brighter note, Hector Lombard appears to have settled into his new MMA life at welterweight. He bounced around the stage before coming on the scale — even appearing as if he forgot to disrobe for a moment!
An amped-up and mohawked Diego Sanchez got a huge reception from the Dallas crowd, complete with a “YES! YES! YES!” chant.
