Johny Hendricks earned the title which he thought he won last year at UFC 171 tonight, fighting his way to a five-round decision victory over Robbie Lawler to win the UFC Welterweight Championship.

Hendricks, fighting in front of his hometown fans in Dallas, Texas, earned the belt with a combination of superior wrestling and a bit more varied standup attack than his opponent’s. It was mostly the former All-American wrestler’s leg kicks and straight punching which kept him ahead in the first two rounds, and a takedown seemed to seal the victory in the final round.

Lawler put up an excellent fight throughout, though. The Iowa native rocked Hendricks with straight lefts and right hooks in the third and fourth rounds, likely earning both stanzas on the judges’ scorecards. But a bloody Hendricks had a little more left in the fifth, out-landing Lawler with striking combinations, and scoring a final takedown.

Lawler falls to 22-10-1 with the loss. Hendricks, the new UFC Welterweight Champion, rises to 16-2.

At UFC 171, Johny Hendricks defeated Robbie Lawler by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47) to earn the UFC Welterweight Championship.
