Brendan Schaub scored his first career submission victory at UFC 165 in a heavyweight bout between two former professional football players. Schaub, known as the “The Hybrid,” earned his nickname tonight — as he went from brawling with Matt Mitrione to securing a D’Arce choke which earned him the win at 4:06 of the first round.
Mitrione, who refused to touch gloves to begin the bout, struggled with Schaub’s hand speed, finding himself bloodied by a right hand midway through the stanza. He scored a nice inside leg kick before Schaub took the bout to the mat with a big takedown following a wild series of haymaker punches.
Mitrione scrambled back to his feet, but Schaub secured a D’Arce choke. Mitrione would struggle mightily before losing consciousness.
Schaub advances his record to 10-3. Mitrione falls to 6-3.
