Considering the pre-fight banter Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub had heading into UFC 165, “The Hybrid” didn’t have difficulties backing up his verbal jabs , as he choked out “Meathead”in the opening round. Not only was it a big win for Schaub, in terms of his record, but it was a nice demonstration of why the D’arce choke can ruin your night in a hurry.
So, due to the fact Schaub didn’t take much punishment in the quick bout, UFC President Dana White revealed afterwards that the heavyweight could be fighting again soon (comment via MMA Junkie.com).
“He might slide into a slot now where something else just fell out,” White said. “We might have another fight for him soon.”
“Tonight was an easy night for him, a little warm-up.”
White didn’t offer any specific details, but there is no shortage of big name heavyweight scraps scheduled in the coming weeks, including Browne-Barnett, Hunt-Silva, Mir-Overeem, and Nelson-Cormier. Of course, it could also mean that Schaub will get asked to fight another un-booked heavyweight in the coming weeks.
With last night’s win, Schaub’s record stands at 10-3, and the 30 year-old has won back-to-back fights now since being stopped by Ben Rothwell and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
