Although Lyoto Machida has been involved in his fair share of bouts that failed to thrill fans, he’s also crushed several top ranked opponents with jaw dropping strikes (recall his front kick KO of Randy Couture). This is why most pundits and fans believe Phil Davis will have to get Machida to the ground tonight at UFC 163, if he hopes to defeat the #1 light-heavyweight contender.
Of course, thankfully for Davis and his fans, “Mr. Wonderful” is a ridiculously talented and decorated wrestler, who typically can determine where a fight takes place. That said, Machida is one of the sport’s more elusive 205’ers, and it’s worth noting that he’s defeated other decorated wrestlers like Dan Henderson, Rashad Evans, Ryan Bader and the aforementioned Couture. While speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently, however, Davis argued “The Dragon” hasn’t faced a wrestler like him.
“He has had good success against wrestlers, but he hasn’t had any success against a national champion wrestler,” said Davis, who is a former All-American out of Penn State. “Even high level wrestlers like Dan Henderson and Randy Couture, they’re Greco guys. We have a different skill set than they have. If you say wrestling to the average person, it’s a very broad umbrella. But there are a lot of different kinds of wrestling that people who know wrestling will understand.”
We’ll see how it all plays out here in a few hours. UFC 163 will be hosted by Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena and will feature featherweight champ Jose Aldo taking on Chan Sung Jung.
