In a result which shocked the Rio de Jainero crowd, “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis won an upset victory over Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida in the co-main event of UFC 163.

Davis and Machida fought a three close rounds, but Machida had seemed to have sealed the victory at the final bell — evading all of the Davis’ takedown attempts in the third round, and most in the first two. More importantly, Machida appeared to land the more significant strikes in the bout’s long standup exchanges.

But the conclusions of round one and two found Davis scoring some solid “ground-and-pound” punching following successful takedowns, which would seem to be the difference, at least in the judges’ scorecards.

The judges scored the bout 29-28 across the board, to a resounding chorus of boo’s from the Rio de Jainero crowd.
