There are a lot of important bouts scheduled for tonight’s UFC 163 card in Rio de Janeiro, with interesting backstories behind them, and one of these is the light-heavyweight tilt between Vinny Magalhaes and Anthony Perosh.  For starters, both men are in need of a win, as Magalhaes is coming off a one sided, unanimous decision loss to Phil Davis at UFC 159, and Perosh was bombed out by Ryan Jimmo in his last fight at UFC 149. The bout lasted just seven seconds.

Tonight’s match-up is particularly intriguing for grappling enthusiasts, as Perosh is an accomplished BJJ black belt, while Magalhaes is a superstar in the jiu-jitsu world. As a result, while speaking to MMA Radio recently, Magalhaes was asked if he’s going to be gunning for a “Submission of the Night” bonus at UFC 163, and “Pezao” had this to say:

“Always – that’s one thing I always try to go after,” he said. “I haven’t been lucky (in the UFC), but maybe this time. That would be great – ‘Submission of the Night’ in Brazil. If I see an opening, my favorite one to get would be a gogoplata, but it’s not one I go after much. If it happens, it happens. But that’s definitely my favorite.”

That would be pretty sweet to see, particularly against a guy who’s spent more than a couple of hours on the mat. Of course, as history tells us, often fights between two all-star grapplers end up being stand-up affairs rather than epic, ground battles. Guess we’ll see how it all goes down soon enough.
