Roy Nelson has done a solid for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, as the veteran heavyweight has agreed to step in and fight Stipe Miocic at the promotion’s June 15th card in Winnipeg. The fight, which was reported by USA Today / MMA Junkie.com, was added after Renan Barao was forced to withdraw.
The interim champ was scheduled to fight Eddie Wineland in the main event, however, torn ligaments in his foot will prevent him from competing. According to the report the promotion is still searching for a new opponent for Wineland, and if a fight is signed, the main card will feature 6 bouts.
Miocic was originally scheduled to fight Soa Palelei on the undercard, however, due to the move Palalei will serve as a replacement fighter if any heavyweight gets injured.
Nelson, of course, just competed a few weeks ago at UFC 159 and took out Cheick Kongo in the first round. Miocic will be fighting for the first time since September when he was stopped by Stefan Struve.
So, there you have it; it’s not a championship fight but it’s a nice addition. Rashad Evans versus Dan Henderson will now serve as the main event for UFC 161.
