Brad Tavares was a runner-up for a season of TUF, while Elias Theodorou won an early international TUF version. That’s all you need to know.
The open firing off strikes from distance, but soon Tavares is shooting for a takedown and forcing Theodorou to work back up. Tavares continues to clinch and smother him, and Theodorou continues to hit him often. This is a tough round to score, but the takedown probably gave it to Tavares.
It’s almost as if their respective cornermen told them in between rounds, “Do what he does, only better.” Round 2 has Theodorou going for takedowns, Tavares reversing him, the duo battling in the clinch and marking each other up with short strikes – this one is going to be a pain in the ass on the judges’ scorecards.
Theodorou opens Round 3 with a nice slam, and then they’re scrambling and Theodorou gets him down again. But Tavares ain’t going out like that, and during the course of another scramble, he takes Theodorou’s back. He sniffs around for the choke and can’t quite pinpoint it, but back-mount for the duration means he’s taking the round for sure.
