A plethora of matches for the UFC’s first foray onto FOX for the year of 2013 have been announced. Three matches were announced today, and all of the have a bit on intrigue in them. A heavyweight match between Mike Russow and Shawn Jordan is set, Ricardo Lamas versus Erik Koch has been shifted to the card from the New Year’s Eve card, and lastly TJ Grant will take on veteran lightweight Matt Wiman. UFC on FOX 6 is headlined by a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson in Chicago Illinois.
Mike Russow and Shawn Jordan are both coming off losses that are equally disappointing in different ways. Russow was finished in the first round by newly minted TUF Brazil coach Fabricio Werdum. Jordan on the other hand was smothered by longtime UFC heavyweight Cheick Kongo against the cage. Both fighters are looking to prove that they are better in their last fight, but only one will be able to do so. For Russow this will be a big fight since he is from Illinois himself.
Ricardo Lamas and Erik Koch is only being moved from UFC 155, but there is multiple reasons for that. First, this could easily be a number one contenders fight considering Koch was supposed to fight for the title, but he was injured and lost out to former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Now he faces rising contender Lamas a week before Aldo and Edgar finally fight. Plus, Lamas is from Chicago, Illinois – so he will bring in some ticket sales along with Koch who is from Iowa which is close enough for a drive.
Then you have a bout between TJ Grant and Matt Wiman. Both have aspirations to challenge for the title one day, but they will need a win here. Grant is on a three fight win streak which has left him undefeated since the drop to 155, and Wiman has been on a tear as of late going 5-1 in his last six fights. Both are on the cusp of being within the top five in the lightweight division.
