A key bout in the female flyweight division will go down Friday night at The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale as Roxanne Modafferi takes on Barb Honchak.

When the pairings were released for the tournament to crown the first-ever female flyweight champion, many had money down on Modafferi and Honchak facing off in the finale.

Instead, it was two unknowns who did battle – at least until weigh-in issues allowed Modafferi to step in on short notice.

Now, the veterans of the sport get the chance to square off vs. one another.

The 35-year-old Modafferi stepped out of a planned fight with Honchak at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale to take on Nicco Montano for the belt when Sijara Eubanks was removed. Modafferi, who had a previous run with the UFC, lost via decision, seeing her two-fight win streak snapped in the process.

Over the course of her career, Modafferi has tested her skills vs. the likes of Jennifer Maia, DeAnna Bennett, Andrea Lee, Raquel Pennington and Sarah Kaufman. She even fought Honchak back in 2011, losing via third round submission.

When you think of the “old guard” in the sport of women’s MMA, Modafferi is right there. She has been competing since 2003 and is now 21-14 overall in her career – with another five fights under her belt from two stints on TUF.

Honchak, three years the elder, saw her seven-year unbeaten run come to an end in her official UFC debut this past December when she dropped a split decision to Lauren Murphy. Over that span, she picked up victories vs. Leslie Smith, Vanessa Porto, Aisling Daly, Nina Ansaroff and Felice Herrig.

Much like her opponent, Honchak has been around the sport since 2009 and even fought Cat Zingano in her second pro bout. She appeared well on her way to the finals of TUF before falling via decision to Montano.
