Takanori Gomi would give up a major enjoyment if the UFC were to come calling with a title shot.
“I will quit drinking,” said Gomi, after his UFC 172 victory over Isaac Vallie-Flagg Saturday night, in an interview with MMAjunkie.com. “I’m thinking about retirement, but I know there’s going to be fun out there waiting for me to fight.”
Gomi improved to 35-9 in his career and evened his Octagon mark to 4-4 with the win. “The Fireball Kid” rebounded from a loss to Diego Sanchez in Japan by controlling 10 of the 15 minutes with Vallie-Flagg.
While a title shot in the stacked lightweight division is still several wins away, Gomi is likely to return to action when the UFC heads back to Japan, according to UFC president Dana White.
“It makes a lot of sense to have Gomi on the card,” he stated. “I’m cool with him fighting (in the U.S.), but we’re going to need him in Japan.”
