We’re now just days away and yet former middleweight Chael Sonnen continues to train for a possible title shot against Jon Jones on Sept. 22 in Toronto. Given the past record of Vitor Belfort and the recent string of bad luck the UFC has had to deal with, Sonnen tells UFC president Dana White that he is ready to step in last minute.
“Chael Sonnen is in full training camp right now,” said White. “He’s been training since he got offered the Jones fight. He said, ‘I’m in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway.”
The bout against Sonnen was originally offered to the champ, Jones at UFC 151, but was soon declined as Jones had said ‘there was not enough time to prepare.’
Sonnen may likely not get his expected title shot, but he does still have a challenge in front of him as he has a tentative fight scheduled against Forrest Griffin on Dec. 29 at UFC 155: Dos Santos vs. Velasquez II in Las Vegas. White admits that Sonnen was kept from the upcoming Brazil cards by design.
“I don’t want to bring him back to Brazil,” White said. “I just don’t. At the time we were going to do that, the Anderson fight, we could have really prepared for it and got ready for it and everything else.
“I just wouldn’t bring him back down there. It just doesn’t make sense. There’s no need for it.”
