Since Robbie Lawler has returned to welterweight, the feared slugger has scored two stoppage wins and has done so under the UFC banner. It’s been a remarkable and captivating turn around for a man who last July, dropped a unanimous decision loss to Lorenz Larkin while he was still competing at 185 for Strikeforce. If someone had told you then that one year later, Lawler would be ranked #9 in the UFC welterweight division and a key win away from the title shot mix, your response likely wouldn’t have been kind.

Of course, thanks to the awe inspiring power of Lawler and his evolving tool kit, “Ruthless” is not to be overlooked in any fight. Following his head kick driven, stoppage win over Bobby Voelker at UFC on FOX 8, Chael Sonnen had this to say about the vet during the post-fight, FUEL TV broadcast.

“Robbie Lawler is like Vitor Belfort. He has nasty hands, and everyone is worried about them. Then he double crosses you and gets you with a big kick. This is turning into his coming back party.”

That’s definitely a good comparison. Lawler’s resurgence also comes at a time when critics are jumping on fighter’s known for decisions, rather than finishes, so don’t expect the UFC to gloss over the striker’s accomplishments. In fact, it’s pretty much certain Lawler will fight a top contender next, and if he wins, he could be knocking on the door of a title shot.
