Now that all the hyping of his bout at UFC 148 is over, Chael Sonnen can now be a little more honest with the media. Sonnen had shocked many fans as he was gracious in defeat and even lent compliments to his former foe during the post-fight press conference. UFC President Dana White gives some insight into how Sonnen really felt about how his fight went with Silva.
“This is what Chael Sonnen said to me after the fight. He didn’t say it at the press conference, but he said it to me. He said, ‘I have so much respect for this guy, Dana. I’ve been competing in combat sports since I was seven years old. In that first round, when I was on top of him, hittin’ him with those big elbows, I felt him break. I broke him in that first round. He came back in the second round and destroyed me. I’ve never seen anybody do that, ever.'”
This is not hard to believe since that is exactly what Sonnen had said during the UFC 148 countdown. He felt Silva break and give-up at times in their first bout, yet in the fifth round, Silva was able to dig deep and pull out the victory – something Sonnen admits is extremely hard to do.
