And here is the big news that Chael Sonnen was alluding to yesterday about receiving a change of opponent. As of now, Jon Jones will take on Vitor Belfort at UFC 152, and according to the UFC, they’ve verified with CagedInsider.com that Chael Sonnnen will still in fact take on Forrest Griffin at UFC 155 on Dec. 29. That doesn’t stop the brash self proclaimed champ of two divisions from creating a stir in the media with his comments.
“I’ve got an agreement to fight a gentleman named Forrest Griffin on December 29, but I don’t know,” said Sonnen. “Jon Jones has a date of September 22 and right now, he’s fighting Vitor Belfort. Vitor never shows up, Vitor has pulled out of way more fights than he has ever shown up for, so if I had to guess you’ll be seeing me fight Jon Jones on September 22. ”
“If I was to tell Jon Jones something, I would tell him I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news. Good news Jon, the first punch that I throw at you might not land. The bad news, is there are going to be five more coming right after it. – Via ESPN Radio“
This all seems to be conjecture on Sonnen’s part as Belfort was seen yesterday on Inside MMA training and in high hopes of putting on a war with Jones. No sign of injury or of considering the drop out from the fight as Sonnen insinuates. The UFC has also went forward with advertising Jones vs. Belfort for UFC 152, which would be unlikely if there was any questions of Belfort not competing. Yes, Sonnen could be playing second string to the headliners, but as of now there is no signs of Belfort bowing out of UFC 152.
