Ben Rothwell didn’t pick up any bonus awards for his win over Brandon Vera at UFC 164, but the massive heavyweight certainly buzzed the MMA world by charging out in round three and putting the vet away. If that wasn’t enough, then Rothwell proceeded to raise even more eyebrows by calling out Travis Browne.
After the event, Rothwell had this to say about why he’s interested in fighting the rising heavyweight (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I just think it would be a great fight,” Rothwell said in the post fight presser. “I know he’s up there in the rankings right now. The UFC probably has big plans for him. But maybe they need him to have another tough fight for first (before a title shot), and I think it’d give him a good fight for the fans.”
It certainly has the makings of a nasty and violent bout, but at the end of the day, Browne is ranked #5 while Rothwell isn’t in the top ten. So what did Browne think of Rothwell’s call out? Well, speaking via Twitter, he’s some of what the heavyweight had to say…
LOL @rothwellfighter had your chance a yr ago but you magically sprained your little toe and now you want to be given something I’ve earned.
Then, after Rothwell clarified with a tweet that the call out was prompted by “respect”, Browne responded:
Ok @RothwellFighter if it was about respect then you would work yourway up the ladder andearn the shots I’ve earned notask for them w/themic
So, it doesn’t really sound like this fight’s going to happen does it? Considering Browne’s within reach of a title shot it was a bit of a long shot to begin with. Regardless of who Rothwell fights next, Saturday’s win was crucial.
