The UFC is always looking to  expand globally, especially in Mexico. With the organizations heavyweight champ being Mexican American and the new top contender being half Mexican, what better time is there to capitalize with a card south of the border than now?

After over three years of talks of Zuffa putting on an event in Mexico City, a report has come out  from Mexican media outlet LAAFicion (Spanish) that the organization has reserved the main arena in Mexico City for UFC 172, targeted for either April 19 or 26. And of course that’s headliners–champ Cain Velasquez versus Fabricio Werdum.

Also rumored to be in talks for the card is Latin fighters Diego Sanchez, Gilbert Melendez (rematch?) and TUF winner Kevin Gastellum. The card would probably also target the only current Mexican born fighter in the organization, Erik Perez. Outside of that you could expect some new local talents to make their debut on the prelim half According to the source, the UFC is set to make the official announcement shortly.

UPDATE: Dana White has clarified that the card weighs on Velasquez being cleared for an MRI injury suffered in his last bout.

“We haven’t offered anyone a fight for that card and Cain is injured right now and might need surgery. Obviously, we’re not going to Mexico without Cain Velasquez.” –
