A few thousand eyebrows have been raised in the last day or so, due to Dana White’s revelation that he plans to talk with Roy Jones Jr. this weekend, not long after Anderson Silva repeated his desire to fight the boxing star. Now, the story is getting even better (or worse depending on your opinion), as ¬†Jones Jr. apparently has said a MMA bout is on the table…

The shocking news comes from veteran boxing and MMA writer Kevin Iole, who recently tweeted:

I’m stunned, but I just got a text from @RealRoyJonesJr and he said he is planning to talk to @danawhite about fighting MMA. Whoa.

Now granted, just because Jones Jr. says he’s going to “talk” about competing in MMA with White, doesn’t mean that it’s going to happen, but still, it’s a bit of a shocker. Most folks likely thought White was going to talk to Jones Jr. about the possibility of a boxing match with Silva, and even if the boxer is thinking about MMA, one would assume he’s got zero chance of booking a MMA fight with Silva (and probably zero chance of winning one versus “The Spider” also).

So, there you have it. Could the UFC even be considering going this route after the James Toney experiment in 2010? Oh, and if you don’t follow boxing too carefully, Jones Jr. is 44 years old. When Toney was promptly submitted by Randy Couture at UFC 118 he was 42.
