While MMA fans have already put Jones-Teixeira on the calendar for February, 2014, if everything plays out right, another all-star about could go down around then. Dana White has relayed that the UFC is hoping to book the long awaited Dominick Cruz-Renan Barao fight in early 2014, but if the bantamweight champ can’t return, they’ll have to do “something else.”
That plan B will likely involve Cruz getting stripped of his title and being handed to the interim champ Barao, since “The Dominator” hasn’t fought in over two years due to knee surgery. Although it’s been reported that Cruz is on track to make his return, no unification fight has been announced yet.
So, does Barao have another opponent in mind he’d like to throw down with? While speaking to MMA Junkie.com recently, here’s what the P4P contender had to say about the return of Cruz, and the ‘what if he can’t fight yet’ scenario.
“What Dana White decided was that in February, either Dominick is coming back, or he’s making a decision,” Barao said. “I hope he comes back because I want to be able to fight him for everyone.”
“I have to fight him to take off that little [asterisk] that’s still on my record. We have a score to settle.”
“No preference,” Barao said about who he could fight next if Cruz isn’t ready to go. “I’m training to face whoever shows up. Whoever comes, I’ll show what I’ve been working on.”
Cruz-Barao would certainly be an awesome addition to the UFC’s spring schedule. Hopefully it finally happens.
