Just when it appeared as though a compelling bantamweight fight between T.J. Dillashaw and Raphael Assuncao had been booked for the September 4th, UFC on FS1 3 card in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, a report has surfaced stating the fight’s on hold.
According to a report from MMA Junkie.com, which cites “sources with knowledge of the fight”, Assuncao will not be able to compete at the upcoming event due to a “lingering medical issue.” The story adds that the fight will be moved to a future card, which is good news, as it’s a fight that certainly makes sense.
Assuncao has won four straight bouts since he dropped down from featherweight and is currently ranked #6 in the division. Dillashaw has also won four consecutive bouts and sits in the #9 spot.
The card currently sits at 10 fights, as Globo.com as is also reporting that Lucas Martins is going to fight Octagon newcomer Ramiro Hernandez at the event.
In addition to the headliner between light-heavyweight contenders Glover Teixeira and Ryan Bader, the upcoming event will also feature “Jacare” Souza vs. Yushin Okami, Joseph Benavidez vs. Jussier “Formiga” and Johnny Bedford vs. Hugo Viana. Not bad for a free, televised card.
