The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced yesterday that another pairing of two of the world’s top light heavyweights has been added to January’s UFC on FOX lineup — with Phil Davis to take on Ryan Bader.
Davis vs. Bader will be on the UFC on FOX main card.
The event, which will take place January 24 at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, is headlined by top 205 lb contenders Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Johnson. Their bout is said to decide the next contender for Jon Jones’ UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.
Davis is sixth in the UFC official rankings at light heavyweight. Bader is eighth.
Davis is 13-2 in his MMA career, and is coming off a victory over recent title challenger Glover Teixera back in August. The win represented a rebound for Davis who had lost to Johnson back in April.
A native of Pennsylvania, Davis was a standout wrestler at Penn State, earning All-American honors four times, and a Division 1 championship once.
Bader is 18-4 in his MMA career, and has won his last three bouts. A Nevada native, Bader was also a successful collegiate wrestler: a two-time All-American and Pac-10 champion at Arizona State.
The fighters have two common opponents in recent years. Both scored decision wins over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira; Bader in 2010, Davis in 2011. But they had mixed results against Lyoto Machida — Bader fell to “The Dragon” by knockout in 2012, while Davis won a controversial decision last year.
